This week on my Genius Hour project I did more rhythm work with Hotel California. I did more of the rhythm stuff with my guitar teacher. He plays the music really well, so it’s easier for me to follow along and pick it up. He also taught me a little bit more history about Hotel California and the Eagles. What the Eagles liked to do with songwriting is they wrote the chords first and then tried to find words that fit it. Usually bands do the opposite.
This past wednesday during Genius Hour day I practiced with another classmate. We pulled up the music and got out my sheet music so I could listen and discover what I need to work on. I discovered that I need to work on a little bit of my rhythm for the song and to learn the solo parts for the acoustic guitar. Right now I’m able to keep the beat with the song. I can keep up with the band while they are plating. I feel good about my progress. This coming week I want to completely understand all of the rhythm patterns and try to work on mastering the solo parts. Then I will be able to play the song with the band using youtube. I want to use my time this week practicing playing along more with the song and by practicing with other people I know that can help me.

So the second week of my Genius Hour project was spent focusing on the Eagles song Hotel California. I spent my Monday guitar lesson learning the basics of this song. I went through the song with my guitar teacher and we played it together while using sheet music until I can memorize the song. We worked on the rhythm pattern of the song and the chords to it. This will help me learn how to play it.
I have looked at history of the song and how it was made. I found out that the melody of the song was composed by Don Felder, lead guitarist for the Eagles, in a rented house on Malibu Beach. He recorded the basic tracks with a Rhythm Ace drum machine and added a 12 string guitar on a four-track recording deck. Don Henley and Glenn Frey, also of the Eagles, wrote most of the words. The Eagles recorded the track with Don Henley on lead vocals but had to lower the key that it was originally written in to better fit Henley’s voice. The song was released as the second single from the album “Hotel California” in 1976. Now that I have the rhythm patterns and the chords I hope to be able to play the song within the next two weeks. Soon I will be uploading video clips of practice sessions so you can follow my progress. I hope you enjoy it. My genius hour project is about music on the guitar. Not just any music, but classic rock songs by the bands The Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The songs that I will attempt to learn will include Hotel California, Tequila Sunrise, Simple Man, and Sweet Home Alabama. With these songs I will be going in depth on how these songs are played to the smallest detail. With this project I will be able to explore these songs in depth and how they are planned.
With this project I will be able to learn new chords and sounds. This will be able to increase my expertise in music. Things I will be using for this project include an acoustic guitar, internet access, and sheet music. Living with my dad I have listen to a lot of classic rock, but I have always loved the bands The Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd. That is how i came up with what songs I will be learning. With learning both the solo and rhythm parts I believe it would take me three weeks each to learn each song. One of my challenges I would have to get though is managing my time to the fullest. I have to set up a time with genius hour time on Wednesdays to practice. I want this project to speak to youth musicians on how you can get better. I want them to experience how I accomplished my goal to learn these four songs and to go beyond what I have done. |
